The 3 Web Sling Hitches

Web slings are a heavily relied upon and essential lifting tool in the rigging industry. In this article, we’re using THOR-TEX Web Slings to show the three types of lifts every operator should know when using lifting with web slings: the choker, the basket, and the vertical hitches.

1. The Choker Hitch

This lift is performed by slipping one end of the sling around the object or through a designated lift point and pulling the lift-end of the sling through itself. Since it has nearly 360-degrees of contact to the object being lifted, it’s a great way to lifting long, round objects, like bar stock, piping, large conduit and more. However, it’s mechanical advantage is low, so it has the lowest capacity of all three hitches.

2. The Basket Hitch

To perform this lift, feed one end of the sling through a designated lift point and attach both eyes to the lifting device. Since it operates with the highest working load limit, this hitch is great for supporting heavy objects, like machinery, and large tools.

3. The Vertical

This lift is performed by attaching one eye to the lifting device, and the other eye to the objects designated lift point. It’s simple and fast lift with lots of control, and can be used with multiple slings to control long or heavy objects.
