Lee's suspension bridge project in North Carolina is a testament to innovation, teamwork, and craftsmanship. Utilizing PRO Strand 3/8" X 250', 7x19, Hot Dip Galvanized Steel Cable, Lee and a team of four spent about a year constructing this visually striking and functional structure, completing it in February 2024.
The suspension bridge measures 83 feet in length and is suspended 40 feet above the forest floor. It features a sturdy wooden plank walkway supported by four main cables, with 15-foot platforms at either end. The bridge, weighing 2,000 pounds, is designed to be both "child and drunk proof," with secure wire mesh sides for safety. Additionally, the tree bases were protected during construction to minimize environmental impact.
The construction process began by anchoring the main cables to sturdy trees, ensuring overall stability. Wooden planks were then installed for the walkway, allowing for drainage and reducing the bridge's weight. Wire mesh sides added an extra layer of safety. A unique feature—a gong—was installed, providing an interactive element for users.
Lee expressed immense satisfaction with the final product, noting its "wow" factor and drawing comparisons to canopy walks in Central America. The bridge has become a local landmark, offering a safe and scenic walkway for nature enthusiasts and creating a unique experience.
