Belly Up Rooftop Cantina
In the heart of Belize, Central America, Joel and Linda embarked on an ambitious project to enhance their retirement home. Combining the natural beauty of the region with superior craftsmanship, Joel transformed his outdoor stairway, landing, and rooftop into a stunning and secure cantina using a mix of E-Rigging's Revo, Axis, and Legacy Cable Railing Systems.
Meet the Residents: El Mago and Daisy Mae
Linda and Joel’s home is shared with two delightful canine companions. El Mago, a vigilant German Shepherd, enjoys patrolling the rooftop, ensuring the safety of the property. On the other hand, Daisy Mae, a charming poodle, finds comfort in any available lap, often basking in the company of Joel and visitors.
The Vision: A Safe and Scenic Vantage Point
The primary goal was to create a safe and aesthetically pleasing space for both relaxation and entertaining guests. This project utilized over 1,200 feet (about 365.76 m) of Haas 1/8" x100', 1x19 Type 316 Stainless Steel Cable to ensure robust and durable railings, perfectly complementing the cantina's inviting atmosphere. The combination of E-Rigging's high-quality cable systems with the exceptionally hard Grenadillo and Bullet tree woods resulted in railings that are not only secure but also visually appealing.
Overcoming Challenges: The Morning Dove Incident
Every project comes with its unique set of challenges. Early in the construction phase, a local mourning dove decided to make one of Joel's basket-style barstools its home, building a nest and causing a slight delay. This unexpected guest added a touch of local wildlife charm to the project, reminding everyone of the close connection to nature that living in Belize offers. No doves were harmed in the project, allowing nature to finish what she started.
The Result: Belly Up Rooftop Cantina
The culmination of Joel's efforts is the "Belly Up Rooftop Cantina," a secure haven for social gatherings and serene moments. The cantina provides an excellent vantage point for observing the diverse bird species of Belize, including the peacocks that frequent their neighbor’s rooftop.
